Interactive Screens
Overview
I love screens. Large ones. Touchscreen. Multitouch bonus. The following is a sample of interactive screen and kiosk projects I’ve done.
- Wayfinding-in-a-Week
- 3D Map
- Gesture Sign-In
- Animated Signage
- HK Museum Concepts
Wayfinding-in-a-Week
I designed and built a wayfinding (non-touch) screen in a week. It has these features:
- Adobe AIR app - with map drawn programmatically, audio and visual effects.
- Webcam to enable interactivity: detect movement and allow user to do a “swipe” gesture and change the map from a floor plan to the MIT campus map.
- RESTful event feed program (python) that push events at nearby conference rooms to the screen.
- An IKEA table stand (help by teammates)
Despite the time limit, the system was fully functional and got lots of feedback by users over a 3-month span.

3D Wayfinding
The new MIT Media Lab building is very transparent - before it was officially moved in in December 2009, I designed a 3D visualization of the innovative architecture, which has lots of glass (you can see many people/labs from anywhere) and 7 double-floor “cubes” that houses different labs (each one has multiple groups and dozens of researchers/students).
Gesture Sign-In
A multi-user collaboration kiosk (to share events of interest) app that I developed - it has a widget to allow users to sign in using a hand gesture on a touchscreen. No RFID, no phone, etc. needed.
Animated Signage
An animated signage app that displays various locations of interests, written in Flash.
HK Museum Concepts
Working with friends at HKDI, we came up with these concepts for the Hong Kong Art Museum:
